On June 6, 2005, the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, bestowed an Honorary Doctorate on Norman Belmonte. Our congratulations on this significant recognition.
In 2005 and 2006 Lea and Mal Bank made major gifts to our program. Their support provides the resources to support a Post-doctoral Fellowship in Jewish Studies, a position currently held by Dr. Benjamin Schreier, who, in addition to conducting his research on the writings of the important Jewish writer and poet, Delmore Schwartz, has undertaken the project of teaching courses on American Jewish literature, "New York Jew" being the most recent. Their gifts have also permitted the program to develop an on-line course offering in Jewish Civilization (and soon, Modern Israel) and create several programs designed to enhance our abilities to transmit the meaning of Jewish experience to our students. Our sincere appreciation.
The symbol of the program, a version of the familiar Penn State Nittany Lion's paw with the pad formed by 'Penn State' in cursive Hebrew letters was created by artist Alan Hooper of Toronto, Canada. Our thanks for this major contribution.
The art that graces our web-page design -- the lion in the upper corner and the images that appear over the navigation panel -- were created by Jerusalem artist Helen Bar-Lev. The lion she painted is actually a denizen of the zoo in Jerusalem; nevertheless we felt the animal represents our intent to embed the study of Jewish culture deeply within the world of Penn State.
